Building stronger leadership at Helsinki Rugby Club

HRC board members and volunteers at World Rugby’s leadership course

Five Helsinki Rugby Club board members and volunteers participated in World Rugby’s “Introduction to Leadership and Management” course. This programme is designed to strengthen leadership capabilities within rugby organisations.

Throughout the course, participants explored key areas like effective communication, decision-making, strategic planning and creating positive club environments.

By investing in their own development, these volunteers are helping ensure that Helsinki Rugby Club continues to grow sustainably and provide high-quality experiences for players, coaches and the wider rugby community in Helsinki.

The Leadership and Management course as part of the strategy

The leadership training directly supports Helsinki Rugby Club’s strategy for 2026–2030. According to the strategy, the club’s success depends on how well volunteers are supported: clear roles, ownership of one’s work and access to training are key, and a structure that shares responsibility keeps taking part rewarding.

The club is built on three values: leadership, excellence and family. In practice, leadership means supporting coaches, referees and volunteers with clear roles, sharing responsibility and continuously developing skills.

Become a volunteer

Finland’s oldest and largest rugby club runs on volunteers. Help is needed in coaching, refereeing, events, media, safeguarding, fundraising and club administration. If you would like to bring your skills to the club, get in touch – we are happy to tell you more.

What did the course cover?

World Rugby’s Introduction to Leadership and Management course covered effective communication, decision-making, strategic planning and building a positive club environment. These skills are needed every day in club life, as the board, coaches and volunteers plan activities and support each other.

Volunteering is also a way to learn: the club supports its volunteers with training and clear roles, as set out in the strategy.
